5 Steps To Ensure Your Air Conditioner Is Ready For Summer

Everybody seems to forget about their air conditioner until it’s time to turn it on.

Taking extra care now will mean that you can stay comfortable and avoid sitting through a hot day just because you were a little unprepared.

Regardless of the kind of air conditioner you have installed in your home, the following steps are important to ensure your air-con is ready for a scorching Aussie summer while keeping running costs down.

Step 1 – Change the filters

This is a very simple step to do yourself and we recommend changing the filters once or twice a year.

The filter is designed to remove impurities, pollution and dust from outside to avoid spreading it around your house. A build-up of dust can see this filtering process become less effective. It can also make your air conditioner work harder – the air can’t flow through the clogged filter, it takes longer for the room to cool down, meaning the air conditioner will need to run longer to reach a comfortable temperature.

A build-up of dust is not ideal but not too bad, however, on some occasions you might discover mould!

Mould is a sign that your air-con might need some attention. If you find mould, you definitely want to replace the filter to avoid spreading spores around you home and into the lungs of your family.

Step 2 – Check and clean the coolant lines and drainage

Basically, this is the piping that runs between the outdoor and indoor parts of your air-conditioner. Check the lines to make sure that they aren’t clogged or cracked to avoid ineffective operation and damage to your house and unit.

Step 3 – Clean

This applies to the unit inside the house and, most importantly, the outdoor unit. Ensure that plants and leaves aren’t blocking any air intake ducts.

Step 4 – Give it a test run

Once you have completed the steps above, turn the air conditioner on, and leave it on for some time to make sure everything works as it should.

Unusual noises and smells are signs that something might be wrong with the unit. The reasons for the irregularities are varied and the consequences could be as minor as an annoying sound to something major that could be detrimental to your family’s health.
